The client wished to provide a universal access at the entrance to the Arts Block in the centre of the UCD campus, and provide enhanced amenity open space for the use of staff and students.
We proposed a stage-like introduction of a raised timber deck to connect the various zones including a garden commemorating James Joyce and the existing stepped entrance to Newman House.
The new raised deck has been designed as a strolling path and a place to meet. Timber boards of Yellow Balau hardwood decking sourced from sustainable origins form the surface to the new external gathering space. Long sculptural seating areas located within the deck relate to the existing trees and enliven the space.
The existing mature trees were retained and supplemented by the planting of a broadleaf semi-mature Oak to reflect the campus setting.
New strip plantings of flowering perennials, bamboos and ornamental grasses enhance and enliven the open space year-round.
At nightfall the benches come to life as a procession of overlapping light boxes glowing blue from within. To complete the university colours a halo of green and yellow up lighters silhouette the delicate form and movement of Bamboo and Mahonia against the adjacent buildings, walkway and bridge. All lighting to the new stage area was diffuse and energy-saving LEDS.
